Contemporary Istanbul 2010

Long time no see ! From November, 25th to November, 28th, there is the Contemporary Istanbul Exhibition here gathering 37 galleries from abroad (mainly Germany and the U.K. but also from Iran), and 43 galleries from turkey, showing 2,000 works by 420 artists.

I wasn't expecting it to be that great. You should go if you're around and have some time to spare. It's at Istanbul Convention and Exhibition Center, Rumeli Han (Lütfi Kırdar Uluslararası Kongre ve Sergi Sarayı).

Alright guys I wanted to share a blog with you. I got these two friends, their names are in the title. 3 years ago (in 2007) they got this crazy idea to participate in a rally (The Mongol Rally) going from London to Ulan Bator, Mongolia with an old Renault 4 they bought just for it and after fixing it, painting it, loving it they left. I think they did around 15,000 km in 51 days which is pretty crazy. Watch the video here.

Well those two crazy guys - they're brothers by the way - decided to do it again. On their own this time. And they called it the MondialRally which doesn't mean anything in English but in French "Mondial" means "global" or "worldwide" as you wish.

This time they are in America, all over it. They started in Anchorage, Alaska where they bought a car and repaired it, and they're heading toward Ushuaia, Argentina. Ushuaia is the southernmost city in the world ! They're gonna travel a total distance of about 40,000 km !! They are, at the moment in Mexico. So wish'em good luck ! And follow them on their blog (both in French and in English).

Here is an interesting street name. Yol sokak. "Sokak" means "street" and "Yol" means road... The actual funny thing is maybe taht 200 meters away, there is another Yol sokak (link here - there are apparently 6-7 Yol sokak in Istanbul)

1 street below (I don't have a photo, yet) is called Sürekli sokak, "sürekli" meaning "permanent" or "constant".

It is an exhibition of 111 artworks showcasing painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, photography and the digital arts, created by faculty, alumni and students of the Fine Arts Department at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

Exactly 10 years ago today, a very big earthquake struck Northwestern Turkey. There were officially 17,127 people killed and 43,959 injured, although more than 10,000 people were never found.
Reports show that 120,000 poorly engineered houses were damaged beyond repair. 600,000 people were left homeless after the earth quake.

Unfortunately, Turkey is a very centralized country and most of its industries are in this area, therefore a big population lives there. Oil refineries, several automotive plants, and the Turkish navy headquarters and arsenal in Gölcük.

This increased the severity of the loss of life and property.

Turkish soldiers were given 45 days leave to help rescue their relatives. Bodies were buried quickly in mass graves to stop any spread of disease.

My dad's family lives in Izmit and fortunately we did not lost anyone in the Earthquake. My cousin lost everything since their building was completely destroyed. He and his wife and son weren't home as they'd left the house 2 hours before the earthquake took place and were the only survivors of the 15 stories building.

Sahilköy Beach

Today, with some friends, we randomly drove to the Asian side of Istanbul and found ourselves up North in a village called Sahilköy (meaning literaly "Beach Village"). There wasn't much to do there, I walked a bit in the water and it was deliciously warm and soft. We stayed for 10 minutes and headed back to Istanbul.

Today we spent hours finishing it (we finished at 1.30 am) hoping the final result will be good as it is a project about creativity and entrepreneurship for Turkcell, the number one cellphone operator in Turkey. This building called The Sapphire, is going to be the second tallest in Istanbul with 261 meters. I already took photos of this building. This one was taken from the Loft Residence in Levent.
